McMaster Group Update

October 2007

I have led the group at McMaster for the last seven years, along with my wife Lynette. We’ve had fantastic monthly gatherings at Dr. Harvey’s home, which included dinner for the students, followed by discussions with students, residents and local doctors. Each week, I hope to supplement this gathering with a regular discussion group that will focus on biblical topics, current issues and the necessary tools to thrive as a Christ follower in medical school. I plan on hanging around when classes end, to grab a coffee or lunch with the first-year students and hope to build mentoring relationships. We also plan to have students in our home for some time to enjoy each other. My passion is to help medical students realize that their root identity is not as a student or as a doctor, but as a beloved child of God. It hurts to think of countless Christian students who abandon their faith during medical school, due to business or the pressure of the medical establishment. My desire is to come alongside students, to help them see that God loves them, just as they are, and that we can provide a safe community, where they can wrestle through the issues that might challenge their faith. There’s no reason why students can’t grow in Christ-like maturity during their medical school experience. A dream of mine is to actually get medical students and doctors developing a clinic for the poor in the city. I don’t know if we can do this, but I want to try. This might be a place where fellow seeking students can volunteer alongside our CMDS members and learn, through compassion, the heart of God.

Please join with me and help support our CMDS ministry at McMaster.

October 2006

We launched the year with our annual barbecue at John Harvey's. A trend has occurred where the number of doctors has decreased and the number of students has greatly increased. It was encouraging to see many returning second years and even some interns joining us. This is helpful for the younger students to see that those who are further ahead are coming. We have started our Tuesday Bible studies and will be focusing on Ephesians this term. We are greatly encouraged by the number of second years coming out, but we have had difficulty recruiting the new first year class. Pray that they would commit to our weekly Bible study. I will be planning some time to catch them coming out of class each week and offer coffees. Also pray that there would be a growing interest in the first Central Canada Conference, planned for January 19-21, 2007.

Lynette and I are joining forces this year to minister to the CMDS students. We will continue our monthly gathering at the Harveys which will also include local doctors.

April 2006

We had a very good start with the second years leading in August and getting information out to the first years coming in. As such about 10 first years joined us at the opening barbeque at the Harvey's home. Our monthly meeting has been centered around Rick Warren's book, "The Purpose Driven Life." Each month, one of us would lead a discussion on one of the five themes in the book.

Each week the students gathered on Tuesday nights for a Bible study led by Don. In first term, we focused on the "Attributes of God" and in second term we have been studying Ephesians. We are also trying to start a mentoring program.

In February, we had five first years gather for a Winter retreat at the farm of Drs Phil and Shirley Drijber, south of Hamilton and we attended the Student Leaders' Retreat in March.

We recently had a pot luck dinner for the Bible study group, with first and second years. We also had a pot luck for six third years who are graduating...good fun.

We are hoping to have a prayer and commissioning breakfast for them on May 21 just after they graduate. The first years are keen to make this happen and turn it into an annual event. Could be excellent with family invited to participate. We will plan for an evaluation and planning time in the Spring for next year's launch.
